DM me is a private chat room for exactly two people. There's nothing to install and no account to create. You open a page, send one link to the person you want to talk to, and start typing.
1Starting a chat
- Open DM me. A brand-new chat is created for you automatically, and its address appears in your browser's address bar.
- Tap Invite and send that link to the person you want to chat with.
- When they open the link, the status shows two person icons, and you can both start writing.
Sending the invite
- Copy puts the link on your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere.
- Share opens your device's own share menu, so you can pick a messaging app, email or anything else. If your browser can't do that, DM me opens a ready-to-send email instead.
2Chatting
Type in the box at the bottom and press Send (or Enter). Your messages appear on the right, and your partner's on the left in a different colour, each with the time it was sent, shown in your own language's usual style.
A sample conversation. Grey notes tell you about things that happen in the chat.
- Send stays disabled until your partner has joined.
- You'll hear a short chime when a message from your partner arrives. Your own messages don't make a sound.
- Nothing is saved. If you refresh the page or reopen the link, you start with an empty conversation.
Faded, dashed bubbles
A message that looks faded, italic and dashed (like the third one above) was sent while your partner's tab was in the background, so DM me isn't sure yet that they've seen it. It hasn't failed. It's delivered as soon as they come back, and the bubble then turns normal.
If your partner stays away for a long time (about 30 minutes, or a very large number of messages), sending pauses with a note, and resumes when they return.
3The controls at the top
The header has two rows, and every control stays in the same place so nothing jumps around.
Top row: the chat button and language. Second row: status, distance, theme and chime.
The chat button changes with the stage of your chat
4What the status line means
Normal states are shown compactly. Anything unusual gets a short message.
5Checking the distance between you
Curious how far apart you are? The Distance button lets you each share your location, and DM me shows the straight-line distance between you.
What your partner sees after you open the Distance panel, if they haven't shared yet.
- Tap Distance. This sends a request to your partner, every time you open the panel.
- Tap Share my location and let your browser use your location. Your partner does the same, or taps Deny.
- Once both of you have shared, the distance appears in the panel.
Good to know
- Deny just tells your partner you'd rather not. You can still share later if you change your mind.
- After you share, the button becomes Stop sharing, and Deny goes away. Sharing again afterwards is a deliberate new step.
- Once you've both shared, reopening the panel refreshes both locations automatically and updates the distance, without anyone pressing Share again.
- It's a manual check, not live tracking. Your location is only read when you open the panel and share. You'll hear the chime when an updated distance arrives.
- Location sharing is never remembered. Each time you load the page, you start as "not shared".
- Close the panel with ×. You stay in the chat.
6Making it yours
These three settings are saved in your browser and carry over to future chats. Your partner's settings are completely separate from yours.
Chime: three modes, one button
Tap the bell to cycle through the modes. Soft and loud play a short preview so you can hear your choice.
The chime plays for incoming messages and updated distances, never for messages you send.
7Privacy in a nutshell
- No account, no sign-in, no profile. You're only identified by a random ID for the length of the session.
- Conversations aren't stored. Close the tab, and the messages are gone.
- Send the chat link only to the person you mean to talk to.
- A chat is meant for two people. It isn't designed or tested for a third.
- Your location is shared only when you press Share and your browser allows it.
Questions & answers
The Send button is greyed out. Why?
Your partner hasn't joined yet. If you started the chat, tap Invite and share the link. If you were invited, check that the status shows two person icons.
My partner closed the tab. Are they gone?
DM me tells you as soon as they leave. If they only lost connection, they can reopen the same link to come back, though earlier messages won't be shown again. If they tapped End chat, the chat is over for good, and either of you can tap New chat.
Can I get my old messages back?
No. Nothing is saved, on purpose. If you want to keep something, copy it before you leave.
Why was my chat closed automatically?
Every chat needs one person who created the link in DM me and shared it. If two people both arrive with a link neither of them generated, the chat closes and a note explains why. Start again with New chat and use Invite.
I don't hear any chime.
Check that the bell isn't in silent mode (red bar), and that your device volume is up. Tap the bell to cycle to soft or loud, and you'll hear a preview.
The Distance panel says my location couldn't be found.
Your browser may have blocked location access. Allow it for this site in your browser's settings, then open the Distance panel and share again.
Do my partner and I need to use the same language?
No. Each person picks their own language, and it only changes what you see on your own screen. The messages you type are delivered exactly as written.
